20th anniversary tourney results

The 20th anniversary Sports & Scholarships “Circle of friends” Golf Tournament was celebrated with another sold-out field under hot, humid and muggy conditions, on Thursday July 08, 2010 at the Pike Lake Golf Resort.

The event which attracts foursomes from the Mildmay area as well as Kitchener-Waterloo and points beyond, is a “Texas Scramble” team competition. A large number of the golfers have competed for ten or more years and the event is a popular one on the summer golf tournament circuit. The event originated in 1990 and has always been hosted at Pike Lake.

Open - the Waterloo foursome of Frank & Stan Anagnostopoulos, Peter Black and Tom Papadopolous were steady through intermittent rain-showers with a credible showing of 61 (-11). The two-time defending champs had a slim one-stroke cushion over the first-time entered Kitchener foursome of Gary Draves, Dave Gregory, Gerry Patterson and Tom Swartz at 62 (-10) .

Five other teams carded 63s (-9) including a threesome - Rick Campbell (Mississauga), Steve Currie (Waterloo) and Matthew Wolf (Waterloo); as well as the Peter & Wendy Cober family foursome with sons Brock and Todd of Kitchener; Waterloo Region’s John MacTavish, D’Arcy McKinley, Glenn McLelland and Frank Sullivan; the Kitchener Rivershark Twins fastball team alumni Craig Crawford, and Jim Granger (both of Guelph), Larry Lynch (Kitchener) and Brian Stere (Tavistock); and the Walkerton “Longest Day of Golf” quartet of John Becker, Jim McIntyre, Roy Mullen and Joe Rys.

Mixed (two male/two female) - Bill & Jacquie Ballagh (Kitchener) and George & Marianne Dziarski (Waterloo) scored 67 (-5) and defended their 2009 title with a one-shot victory over the Guelph family of Patti, Paul, Chris and Jen McCormick at 68 (-4).

Ladies - the Walkerton area foursome of Lisa Fortney, Michelle Fortney, Shawna Reinhart and Rene Sachs defended their 2009 championship, improving by two strokes, carding a 71 (-1). This is a new Ladies Flight tournament record. Back two strokes and placing second were Elaine Lang (Chepstow), Shelly Pollock (Ripley), Gladys Stewart and Sherry Weiler, both of Mildmay at 73 (+1).

Family (all foursome golfers related) - the Cober Family’s 63 (-9) was sufficient for a slim margin over the Kitchener foursome of Mike Fuendling, John & Stewart Mills and Dan Weaver at 64 (-8). The Grubb brothers – Jerome, Murray, Philip and Richard were two strokes back at 66 (-6).

The “Cusp” Award (middle of the pack score) at 67 (-5) was the Ballagh/Dziarski pairing.

The Mac Lindsay Memorial “Anchor” Award established a new standard as Cathy MacTavish (Waterloo), Ellen Schmalz and Pat Simpson (both of Mildmay) notched a 91 (+19).

Longest Drive - Brian “Chubb” Stere (Tavistock) and Shawna Reinhart (Walkerton).

Closest to the Pin

Hole #7, courtesy JB Golf Series, Glenn Brogden (Waterloo) and Joyce Millen (Teeswater).

Landing on the Green

On the 150 yard Hole #3, all golfers whose tee shots ended up on the green had their name entered into a draw. Of the 21 successful shot-makers, the winner in a draw was Stewart Mills (Kitchener) who won a hot air balloon flight, courtesy 96.7 CHYM fm / News 570 and Sundance Balloons. Special commendation to Team 11-B, the Grubb brothers who had three successful shots from their family foursome.

Ultimate Golf recipients:

(1)   Pre-Registrations for 2011 Draw - Brian Yahbee (Mildmay) for two spots in the SHOW Golf Tournament at the private Deer Ridge Golf Club in Kitchener on Monday July 26, sponsored by Gary H. Attack, Dundee Personal Investors Inc.

(3)   Raffle Draw - Michelle Fortney (Walkerton), Murray Jordan and Gary Erb, (both of Linwood) each won a spot in the Sports & Scholarships foursome at the Kids Can Play Golf Tournament at Grand Valley Golf Club on Friday July 16.

In a “Guess The Balls and Tees” in a “pickle jar”, estimates ranged from 42 to 328. Both Jim Granger (Guelph) and Larry Margetts (New Hamburg) correctly guessed the winning total of 77, and in a draw, Granger was the winner of the jar, balls and tees while Margetts was awarded a pair of Cineplex/Galaxy Movie passes.

In a cart readiness draw just prior to the 12:30 shotgun start, Kitchener-Waterloo’s Gayle Salter-Kennedy, Amy & Bryan Thompson and Matt Walker won a complimentary round of drinks from the Pike Lake cart server.

The “best-dressed” team – Rosemary Borho (Formosa), Joyce Millen (Teeswater), Danielle Voisin (Walkerton) and Susan Voisin (Formosa) – won Sports & Scholarships golf shirts and caps.

All golfers were provided with items in a gift bag, supplemented by “goody bags” provided courtesy John Bonis and JB Golf Series.

Following dinner, emcee John Weese of CKNX Radio, Wingham welcomed Peter Black, who brought greetings from Drayton Entertainment, the sponsor of the early bird entries (complimentary theatre tickets for each golfer).

The tournament’s Honorary Chair Mandy Bujold, Canadian Boxing Champion and hopeful Team Canada athlete for the 2012 Olympics in London, England, provided a brief overview of her career competitions.

In the Lotto Max draw, of the 36 tickets provided, no team won the super prize. In fact, the super prize was not won, so the next draw will be $50,000,000. Four golf teams won a free ticket for the July 16 draw. The Kitchener foursome of Gary Draves, Dave Gregory, Gerry Patterson and Tom Swartz had the ticket with the most (6) numbers drawn and won pairs of Cineplex/Galaxy movie passes.

Proceeds from the event provide funding for various community projects and charity sports initiatives, as well as student scholarships. The 2010 scholarship awards will be presented at a reception at St. Jacobs Country Playhouse in Waterloo on Thursday evening July 15, including a theatre performance of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”. The evening is hosted and sponsored by Drayton Entertainment.

The 22nd annual tournament is scheduled for Pike Lake Golf Course for Thursday July 7th, 2011.
