30th Annual Sports & Scholarships Golf Tourney a Huge Success

On Thursday July 4, 2019, the 30th annual Sports & Scholarships Golf Tournament was hosted at Pike Lake Golf Centre, with s sold-out field of golfers from southwestern Ontario enjoying a balmy day on the links.

 

CHAMPIONS BY FLIGHT

Men’s/Open - a foursome that included three past Honorary Chairs - Gary Gravett (Goderich - 2017),former CTV Sports Director Randy Steinman (Kitchener - 2003), Juno award winning singer Jamie Warren (Kitchener - 2001)and Curtis Schmalz (Mildmay) scored a 57 (-15) to win the Open Flight. This score matched the tournament record and was a four stroke victory over the Kitchener foursome (and past champions and record holders in 2012 and 2013) Dan Weaver and Curtis, John & Stewart Mills who notched a 61 (-11). The Mildmay quartet of Doug Breig, Robert Cleland, Dave Kirkconnell and Rob Soers also notched 61 (-11).

Past Honorary Chairs- a second foursome of past Honorary Chairs included National Hockey League alumnus Al McDonough (Kitchener - 2015), former professional baseball player Bob McKillop (Kitchener - 2012), retired NHL referee Lance Roberts (Waterloo - 1999) and World Hockey Association alumnus Ted Scharf (Waterloo -  2000).

Ladies - the defending champion ladies foursome of Liane Brown, Rosemary Borho and Susan Voisin (all of Formosa) and Joyce Millen (Teeswater) established a new Ladies Flight record with a bogey-free round that included seven birdies for an impressive 65 (-7). In second position, five-strokes behind, was the foursome of Mary Domm (Ayton), Becca Natches, Gail Poechman (Walkerton) and Sherry Weiler (Mildmay), who scored 70 (-2).

Family (all foursome golfers related) – the family foursome of Patti & Paul McCormick (Guelph), Gayle Salter-Kennedy (Ayr) and Matt Walker (Kitchener) also defended their title in the Family Flight with a 63 (-9) and a two-stroke victory over brothers Joe (Waterloo), Murray (Dorchester), Philip (Cambridge) and Rich Grubb (Hanover) who finished at 65 (-7). Third spot, at 66 (-6) was claimed by a mixed foursome of siblings Chris & Michelle McCormick (Guelph) and newlyweds Jennifer & Kevin Wall (Toronto). Guelph..

Brian & Sandy Fedy and Jane & Larry Margetts (all of New Hamburg) posted a 67 (-5) to claim a one-stroke victory over defending champion Bill & Jacquie Ballagh (Kitchener) and George & Marianne Dziarski (Waterloo) who shot 68 (-4). Third spot was earned by Pete & Wendy Cober (New Hamburg) and their guests Dean & Mo McElhinney (Calgary AB).who were even par at 72.

SKINS

Three “skins” valued at $240 eachwere earned with “eagles” notched on Hole #1 by the McCormick/Wall quartet and Hole #4 by Murray/Mary Lou Schmidt and Brenda/John Thompson (all of Waterloo), and a crafty birdy on Hole #5 by John & Michael Voisin (Formosa), Kelly Voisin (Hanover) and Brian Yahbee (Mildmay). Two teams matched eagles on Hole #6, while three eagles were carded on Hole #11.

50/50 proceeds from the Lions Club of Pike Lake -Minto on Tee Block #3 resulted in the winner Lynn Amatuzio (Waterloo) pocketing $555.00.

 

Special thanks to Pike Lake golf professional Greg Shaw and the Golf Centre and dining room staff for great on-course conditions and a terrific steak buffet that many considered, a superb and much enjoyed meal..

 

HOSTING

STUDENT AWARDS

 

Proceeds from the event provide funding for various community projects and charity sports initiatives, as well as student scholarships. The 2019 scholarship awards of $1,000 and honorable mentions of $300 were presented at the Lions Club of Formosa on Fathers Day brunch on Sunday June 16 at the Formosa Community Centre. South Bruce secondary school graduating students who received the awards were: Pilar Dietrich, Amber, Ashley and Curtis Ruetz, Carter Schaus and Magdalena Wheeler, all graduates of Sacred Heart High School, Walkerton, and Carly Frank and Rachael Van Stuyvenberg from F.E. Madill High School, in Wingham.

 

Elementary school Grade 8 recipients for 2019 were Kailynn Moyer (Sacred Heart Elementary Arts Award) and Saira Zhang (Mildmay Carrick Public Elementary Highest Academic Award).


KW Titans Cavell Johnson Named 2019 Tournament Honorary Chair

KW Titans Cavell Johnson Named

2019 Tournament Honorary Chair   

 Sports and Scholarships is pleased to announce that Cavell Johnson, the head coach of the KW Titans Professional Basketball Club, will serve as Honorary Chair for the 30th annual Sports & Scholarships golf tournament. The event is scheduled for Pike Lake Golf Centre on Thursday July 4, 2019. 

    In his first full season as Head Coach, Johnson guided the Titans within three games of the National Basketball League of Canada Central Division regular season title. Titans finished fourth, behind Division leading London Lightning, St. John’s NL Edge and Sudbury 5 and are currently tangling with the Lightning in the divisional semi-finals. The London Lightning are the current two-time defending champions, and have captured the NBLC championship four times in the league’s seven-year history.   

     Johnson, a native of Fort Washington, MD played three seasons with the NCAA Division I James Madison University Dukes at Harrisonburg, VA and finished his college play with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers at Catonsville, MD. 

     In 2012, in his first year as a professional, Cavell and his Beltway Bombers won the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League championship and he was named as the Finals MVP. 

    Cavell then headed north to Canada, suiting up with the Saint John NB Mill Rats, averaging 10.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in his first NBL Canada season.

     He then moved to the Brampton ON A's, posting career-best average of 14.2 points per game, as well as 6.2 rebounds, and was named the NBLC Defensive Player of the Year. 

    Following a second season with the A's, Cavell headed overseas to become the starting power forward for Vilpas in Finland and MAFC Budapest in Hungary. 

    After brief spells in China and Greece, Johnson returned to the NBL Canada and signed with the KW Titans for the 2016-17 season. The following year, he appeared in only two games as a player before he  embarked on a new chapter in his basketball career when he was appointed as Titans’ coach, a role he also accepted for the current 2018-19 season.

     Cavell has embraced Kitchener-Waterloo and immersed himself in the community where he and the Titans have provided first class entertainment and competition at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium. He looks forward to meet all golfers and guests at Pike Lake on Thursday July 4th. 

    Proceeds from the Sports and Scholarships golf tournament fund bursary awards for students from South Bruce (Mildmay-Carrick and Teeswater-Culross), as well as sporting endeavours and charitable events.

     Scholarship application forms for South Bruce graduating secondary school students are being accepted until Tuesday April 30, 2019.

2019 Application Forms Available For $1,000 Scholarships

  The annual Sports and Scholarships program providing $1,000 financial awards to students who reside in South Bruce is now accepting applications. Scholarship funding will be derived from the 30h annual Sports and Scholarships Golf Tournament scheduled for Pike Lake Golf Centre on Thursday July 4, 2019.

  Students who meet the following criteria are eligible and encouraged to apply:

  • Graduating from secondary school in 2019
  • Currently residing in the municipality of South Bruce, including the villages of Mildmay & Teeswater and the Townships of Carrick & Culross
  • Continuing their education in 2019-2020 at a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Exhibited community volunteerism
  • Displayed academic commitment and participation in extra-curricular activities during their secondary school careers

  Deadline for application is TUESDAY APRIL 30, 2019.

  The program commenced in 1996, and of the 117 students who have received Sports & Scholarships financial awards, 65 have been from South Bruce. As well, 47 students from Mildmay’s two elementary schools have been recognized with Grade 8 achievement awards.

  The 2019 secondary school student awards will be presented at the Lion’s Club of Formosa Father’s Day Breakfast/Brunch on Sunday early afternoon June 16 at the Formosa Community Centre.

  Application forms are available at the Guidance Offices of Walkerton District Community School, Sacred Heart High School, Walkerton, F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, and the Town Crier office (519-367-2681) or can be downloaded from the websitewww.sportsandscholarships.com.

2018 BURSARY AWARD RECIPIENTS RECOGNIZED

2018 BURSARY AWARD RECIPIENTS RECOGNIZED

Bursary awards of $1,000 each were presented on Wednesday June 20 to four local secondary school graduating students from proceeds of the 29th annual Sports and Scholarships Golf Tournament.

Recognition reception

The scholarship recipients were publicly recognized at a reception at the Drayton Public Library, followed by family, friends, sponsors and volunteers enjoying the stage presentation at Drayton Festival Theatre of the hilarious and up-lifting “Canada 151: Better Late Than Sorry”. The production featured humorist Neil Aitchison and a highly skilled supporting cast that included former bursary recipient (2010) Devan Ballagh and her sister Paige, both of Teeswater.  

Sophie Borho – Seventeen year old Sophie Borho of Formosa/Culross, a 2018 graduate of Walkerton Sacred Heart High School, will attend University of Waterloo to study Biomedical Science, including biology, chemistry, physics, calculus and other medical-related subjects. Her long-term objective is eventually enrolling in Optometry School to earn her doctorate. Sophie has embraced her career path following a co-op term at a vision care centre when she was in grade seven. Motivated by two mission trips to Nicaragua, looking ahead Sophie aspires to travel to other countries, including a potential return to Nicaragua, to provide eye-care and help improve peoples’ lives. Her long term goal would be returning to Canada and eventually having her own optometry practice. 

Mackenzie Fischer – Mac Fischer of Teeswater/Culross is a nineteen year old graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Walkerton who has had a co-op work experience in accounting at Bruce Power. This assisted in Mac’s decision to attend the University of Guelph where he has been accepted into the five-year Bachelor of Commerce Co-op Accounting Program. In the long-term, after achieving his CPA designation, Mac envisions a career in the financial industry with hopes of being able to contribute to the efficiency of business, possibly returning to his local roots to be an effective contributor to the growth of local industries.

Gloria Kim - A resident of Teeswater, Gloria Kim is a 17 year old graduate of F. E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, and she plans to continue her education in Health / Medical Sciences at either University of Western Ontario (London) or McMaster University (Hamilton). Her next step would then be admission to medical school and a dream career objective of becoming a doctor, ideally specializing in surgery. Following a family missions trip to Mexico, Gloria was further motivated to eventually share her acquired knowledge internationally and assist impoverished people who need medical aid.

Rhys Martin – Rhys Martin, 18 of Formosa/Culross, and a graduate of Sacred heart High School, Walkerton had completed a co-op placement at Mel’s Welding in Mildmay, and developed a passion for the technology. Subsequently, Rhys competed in the Skills Canada – Ontario welding competition for Bruce-Grey and qualified for the next round in Midland with opportunity to further advance to the provincial competition in Toronto. His career path will take him to Fanshawe College’s Welding Techniques program, and following graduation, he plans to enter the workforce as a qualified welder.  

In addition, local elementary school award winners being recognized in their schools are Jessica Waechter (Mildmay-Carrick Elementary School) and Avrie Goetz (Mildmay Sacred Heart Elementary School).

Summary - since the inception of the program, 117 scholarship awards have been presented, including 65 to graduating secondary school students in South Bruce. Of those, 43 have been graduates of Walkerton District Community School, 16 from Sacred Heart, Walkerton and six from F.E. Madill Secondary in Wingham.

This year’s golf tournament is scheduled for Thursday July 5 with an 11:00 am shotgun start at Pike lake Golf Centre. For information, contact John Thompson at 519-884-4050 or sstj99@gmail.com
